Chemical Plant Security: Gating more than the perimeter

It was clear at the recent Chemical Sector Security Summit (Baltimore, Md., July 31-Aug. 1) that awareness of and activity in security for the chemical process industries (CPI) are growing. The annual summit, now in its sixth year, was held at its largest venue ever and brought together about 650 participants from industry, academia and the government to network with other security professionals, share best practices and learn more about chemical security regulations. One of the strong messages from this summit, as well as from additional sources, is that more attention than ever before is being given to cybersecurity of industrial control systems....

Cybersecurity for Chemical Engineers

There was a time, not long ago, when most groups responsible for industrial control systems (ICS) in the chemical process industries (CPI) were not much worried about security. They had their firewalls in place and their remote access servers, and overall that worked for them. Rarely, a virus would sneak in and usually do little damage. The affected computers would need to be shut down and cleaned out, but this could often be done without even scheduling a shutdown of the process.
Now, however, malware has become much more sophisticated, and all users of industrial control systems need to be aware of the threats. A basic understanding of cybersecurity can be helpful in keeping control systems secure. This article describes concepts such as “defense-in-depth,” as well as emerging practices in this field....

Ask the Experts: Cybersecurity standards

Question: What standard, guideline or regulation should I use to create a cybersecurity program, or should I wait until a standard is finalized? Answer: Waiting until a cybersecurity standard is explicitly selected, accepted and enforced is a mistake for two very good reasons. First, a security program is much more social and cultural than technical. One thing we’ve learned...
