Unipol technology selected for Qatar's first polypropylene plant

Mary Page Bailey

Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (Midland, Mich., www.dow.com), has signed a license agreement with Qatar Petroleum/Qatar Petrochemical Company (QP/QAPCO), for Unipol Polypropylene Process Technology. Unipol technology will be licensed at QP/QAPCO’s polypropylene (PP) production facility to be located in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Slated to produce 540,000 metric tons (m.t) per year of PP, the QP/QAPCO facility will be the first polypropylene plant in Qatar. Products include homopolymers, random copolymers and impact copolymers from a mixed-feed cracker.

Resins produced by Unipol Polypropylene Technology from Dow account for 17% of global polypropylene output. There are currently 48 operating lines worldwide and 15 reactor lines under design and construction using Unipol Polypropylene Technology from Dow Polypropylene Licensing and Catalysts. The Unipol Polypropylene Process is an all gas-phase process for producing a broad range of polypropylene resins.
