Uhde Inventa-Fischer to build world's first commercial-scale plant for the production of flame-retardant Nofia polymer
Uhde Inventa-Fischer AG (Berlin, Germany and Domat/Ems, Switzerland; www.uhde-inventa-fischer.com) has won a turnkey contract to build the world's first commercial-scale plant for production of Nofia, an inherently flame retard- ing polymer (polyphosphonate – PPhos) used as a blend component to impart flame retardancy to other host plastics, for the Belgian subsidiary of FRX Polymers, Inc. (Chelmsford, Mass.; www.frxpolymers.com). The plant will be located in Antwerp, Belgium, and will use FRX Polymers’ proprietary, patented polycondensation process. This flame-retardant polymer, which will be marketed under the trademark Nofia, is ecofriendly, halogen-free, transparent and inherently flame-resistant, making it highly suited for use in the building, transportation as well as in the electronic and electrical industries.
Uhde Inventa-Fischer and FRX Polymers have been collaborating closely in the development and optimization of research-intensive, flame-retardant specialty polymers since many years. “Right from the start, we could clearly sense Uhde Inventa-Fischer’s strong commitment to our joint success,” says Marc Lebel, president and CEO of FRX Polymers. “We are extremely pleased to be on course for expansion with a partner like Uhde Inventa-Fischer at our side”.
Uhde Inventa-Fischer’s scope of supplies will include the basic and detail engineering, supply of all equipment and components, the construction and mechanical completion of the plant. The civil engineering will be carried out by ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany; www.uhde.eu).
