Stamicarbon to provide technology to SOCAR
Stamicarbon B.V. (Sittard, The Netherlands; www.stamicarbon.com) , the Licensing and IP Center of Maire Tecnimont S.p.A, has signed contracts with Samsung Engineering for a urea synthesis plant and a urea granulation plant for The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR; www.socar.az). The scope of the contracts will be licensing, process design package, basic engineering design package, associated services for both plants and the supply of the high-pressure proprietary equipment for the urea plant.
The urea plant will use Stamicarbon’s Urea 2000plus Pool Reactor CO2-Stripping design and MP scrubber. The granulation plant will be based on Stamicarbon’s latest granulation technology. Both plants will have a capacity of 2,000 metric tons (m.t.) per day each. Basic engineering design will be done by Tecnimont ICB, while overall EPC will be done by Samsung Engineering. Work on the plant will start before the end of this year. Commissioning is scheduled for 2016.
The ammonia plant is based on Haldor Topsøe A/S (Lyngby, Denmark; www.topsoe.com) technology and will have a capacity of 1,200 m.t./d of ammonia.
This project is Azerbaijan’s first combined ammonia-urea complex and will be located in the Azerkimya production association’s industrial site in Sumgait, a city some 30 km north of the capital Baku. The plant is set to play an important role in the economy of Azerbaijan by providing a reliable source of fertilizer and, consequently, helping to secure food supplies for the population.
