Making security a ‘process variable’ by integrating process control and security reduces risk more than independent systems
Jon Harmon, Honeywell Process Solutions
To many, the concept of a "smart plant" involves integrating critical process subsystems and instrumentation with the goal of streamlining operations, increasing production and, simply put, making more money. But looking at the bigger picture, the true goal of having an integrated smart plant isn’t solely automating processes or capturing knowledge electronically. The ultimate goal is, rather, to increase the operator’s awareness of his or her environment so as to help that operator make the best decisions in the control room. To that end, plant security — both cyber and physical — is becoming a larger part of that environment....
