Liquid density is important to engineers throughout the chemical process industries (CPI). Knowledge of liquid density is required in the design of storage vessels. In hazard analysis, knowledge of liquid density is required in the design of the relief valves to protect the system. In vapor-liquid operations, such as distillation, knowledge of liquid density is required to determine column diameter. For...

Glycerin has over 1,500 known end uses, including applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food products, with the U.S. market alone demanding around 600-million lb/yr. But over the next two years, biodiesel plants are expected to produce an additional 1-billion lb/yr of glycerin as a byproduct (see box below). As a result, the price of glycerin is falling as fast as biodiesel plants...

A demonstration plant that will produce 5,000 m.t./yr of succinic acid from biomass will be built in Pomacle, France, by BioAmber, a joint venture of Diversified Natural Products (DNP, New York, N.Y.; edlinks.che.com/6894-535) and Agro Industries Recherche et Developpement (ARD, Pomacle). Succinic acid, used in a variety of products, including cosmetics and foods, is produced mainly from maleic anhydride...
